Picked this up mostly because I liked the first one enough to be curious, and the disc turned up last week. Fox/Disney put it out on July 28 in 2.39:1 with Dolby Vision and HDR10, Atmos on the UHD and DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 on the bundled Blu-ray.
The review I read says picture and sound are fine but the material is not demanding, and that lines up with what I saw. What surprised me is that a fashion movie is actually a decent colour test in a way an action film is not. Rows of runway pieces, twenty different makeup approaches on twenty faces, and the disc has to hold subtle shade separation across all of it without anyone going plastic. Some faces are photographed noticeably softer than others, which is a shooting choice rather than the encode, and people always blame the disc for that.
Where it falls flat is the same place these always do: a helicopter flyover that does nothing, a score that just walks alongside the dialogue, and then the Lady Gaga performance late on that finally has dynamics worth the Atmos track. One sequence out of two hours.
Extras are better than I expected. Commentary from David Frankel, Aline Brosh McKenna and Molly Rogers, three featurettes covering the costumes, the Italy shoot and why the 2006 original stuck, plus a gag reel. Then the music video shows up in lossy Dolby Digital stereo, which is the studio habit I cannot get past. You just shipped an Atmos mix and the bonus content is at a 90s bitrate.
