Just saw What Hi-Fi pushing an Epson as their five-star pick for under £800 during their Home Cinema Week thing. I’m guessing it’s one of their 3-chip LCD models that does pixel shifting to fake 4K resolution, not native 4K. At that price point, you’re usually looking at 1080p with some clever upscaling tricks. Still, if it’s getting that kind of praise from the pros, it might actually hold its own in a dark room for movies.
I’m curious about the black levels though. Epson’s cheaper projectors often struggle with contrast compared to DLP units at similar prices. You get better color accuracy out of the LCD, but shadow detail can be mushy. For £800, I’d rather have a DLP with a decent dynamic iris if I’m mostly watching horror or sci-fi. Then again, Epson’s warranty support is usually solid, and bulb life is decent.
Anyone here actually bought that Epson? How’s the fan noise during quiet scenes? And does it handle HDR content without crushing near-black details, or is it more of a SDR machine at this price?
