The other half of Google's CES pitch for Google TV is generative work running on the television itself. Gemini searching your Google Photos library for a specific person or moment, Photos Remix applying artistic styles to your pictures, memories turned into what Google calls cinematic immersive slideshows, and Nano Banana and Veo available to reimagine your photos or create original media directly on the TV.
The photo search is the piece I'd use. Finding one person across years of a library is miserable on a phone and genuinely better on a big screen with a room full of people pointing at it. That's a real use case and I'm glad somebody built it.
The rest I don't follow. My television is an output device. It sits at the end of the chain because it's the only thing in the house with a good panel and a decent speaker layout, and the last thing I want is it spending its processor on a video I'll look at once. A lot of these sets are already slow - Apple built the entire tvOS 27 pitch this year around speed, which tells you where the pain actually is. Adding image generation to a box that takes four seconds to open an app is a strange order of priorities.
TCL devices first, everything else later. And no word on what runs locally versus what goes to a server, which for anyone who'd rather their photo library stayed put is the only question that matters.
