JVC's free firmware for the DLA-NZ900 and NZ800, which the RS4200 and RS3200 get through distribution, is one of the more substantial no-cost updates I have seen land on a projector. The headline is a new picture mode called Frame Adapt HDR Vivid, alongside a Highlight Color Control setting with Low, Mid and High steps, a new Smoother stage inside the MPC super-resolution block aimed at compression noise, and ALLM for gaming.
The release copy cannot make up its mind whether Vivid replaces Frame Adapt HDR or sits next to it. One paragraph says it replaces the function, another says it adds to it. That matters, because Frame Adapt is the reason plenty of people bought these in the first place, and Vivid is not a word that suggests restraint in tone mapping. JVC describe it as brightening bright areas while deepening the dark ones off the PQ curve, which is a contrast stretch with a nicer name on it. In a properly light-controlled room that might be exactly what a dim HDR10 grade needs. In a room with any bounce off the walls I would expect shadow detail to be the first casualty.
ALLM is the part that made me laugh. Auto low latency has been on mid-range TVs for years and it turns up here as a firmware gift on a projector that costs more than most people's cars. Better late than never, and at least they did not charge for it.
The Smoother function is the quiet one worth watching. Most projectors respond to compression noise by sharpening it. If JVC have actually built something that separates macroblocking from detail, that is more useful day to day than another HDR mode.
