Lionsgate is converting Sunrise on the Reaping to 3D for Meta's glasses as home 3D stays dead

Your living room is not getting this one. Lionsgate has agreed with Meta to bring 3D films to its VR Glasses, starting with a 3D conversion of The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, with more of the studio's titles promised later and DNEG involved in that first conversion. On the glasses themselves the listed specs are 5K, Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision, plus IMAX Enhanced certification, on micro-OLED panels.

Meanwhile, look at where 3D actually lives at home. No current smart TV does it. No streaming service offers it for a home screen, and Disney+ keeps its 3D titles for the Vision Pro only. What is left is projectors, already a niche, and Blu-ray 3D, a niche inside that niche. Those of us who bought into it years ago have been left with discs and a dwindling pile of glasses.

The awkward part is that this is not 3D being rejected on technical grounds. Each eye gets its own panel, so there is no crosstalk or dim shutter glass, and that was always the real complaint. It is 3D being moved to a device that one person wears alone, and I am not sure what a shared film night looks like on that.

One regional wrinkle as well: in Germany Lionsgate licenses its films to StudioCanal instead of distributing them itself, so it is unclear whether this arrives there at all. As a conversion it also says nothing about whether the source will ever reach a disc in 3D, and I would not hold my breath on that front.
