Following Microsoft's Xbox Xbox X presentation yesterday, industry figure Geoff Keighley spoke with Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter and former Microsoft executive Peter Moore. The Xbox Series X will cost $400, he said

"Microsoft is waiting for SONY. SONY will have to charge $500 for the PS5, and Microsoft's balance sheet is big - if they wanted to lower the price by $100, the price would be lower and the subsidy would be $10m. "So, I think they're waiting for SONY to reveal the price and release date. It's going to be a holiday, so probably sometime in November, probably $400.

Xbox has a much smaller share of Microsoft's business than PlayStation or Sony. That means Microsoft has more financial flexibility than SONY, can lose money selling hardware and can strengthen itself by weakening SONY. Game Pass reinforces this, and even if Microsoft sells its original Game console at a loss, it offers Microsoft more opportunities to make money.

Xbox One X is compared to Xbox One S, but the company has long been rumored to be working on a lower-priced next-generation console, code-named "Lockhart," that could theoretically capture the lower end of the market. The market, while keeping the price of Series X at $500. Again, if we're in the middle of a recession, a $400 game console, it's not impossible if we're losing a lot of money.
