FlatpanelsHD has updated its QMS support list again and the only note is that more brands now support it. Nobody is shouting about this, manufacturers included, which is a shame, because QMS is one of the few HDMI 2.1 features that changes something you run into every single evening.
Quick refresher for anyone who hasn't hit it. When content changes frame rate, say you go from a 60Hz menu into a 24p film, or from a show into a trailer running at a different rate, HDMI renegotiates the link and you get a black screen for a second or two. On some display and source combinations it is closer to three, with an HDR badge flashing up on the way out. QMS uses the VRR mechanism to change the rate without that handshake, so the switch is seamless.
Why it matters more than the headline HDMI 2.1 features: 4K120 and VRR only pay off if you game. Everybody running a streaming box or a disc player with frame rate matching switched on hits the blanking. Which is exactly why so many people turn frame rate matching off, and then watch 24p films with judder for years without ever knowing that is what they did.
The catch is it has to work end to end. Source, anything in the middle, and the display all need it. One older receiver in the chain and you are back to black screens.
Has anyone confirmed it working on a full chain? I specifically want to know how it behaves through a receiver rather than straight into the panel.
