Mostly YouTube, Netflix and sports - is OLED still the upgrade you feel?

Someone over on r/4kTV asked a version of this that I think gets answered badly most of the time. Their watching is mostly YouTube, Netflix, sports and the occasional film. Gaming happens but is not the point. They came from a normal LED set and want to know whether the jump to OLED is something you notice day to day, not in a dark room with a reference disc.

My honest answer after living with one: the thing you feel is not black level, it is off-angle. On an LED set anyone sitting outside the middle third of the sofa gets a washed, greyish version of the picture, and for sports with four people in the room that is most of the seats. OLED just does not do that. Second thing you feel is motion clarity on panning shots, which sport is made of.

The parts that get oversold for this exact use case: HDR highlights in a bright living room, because an OLED dims its full white field when a hockey rink or a snowy pitch fills the screen, and a decent mini LED will look brighter and more confident in daylight. Also YouTube compression looks no better on a better panel. If anything a good panel makes bad sources more obviously bad.

Burn-in is a smaller risk than the internet says and not zero. Score bugs and league logos are static and bright, and if your set spends four hours a Sunday on the same broadcast layout for years, that is the scenario. Every set has protections now, most people never see it.

Sports in a bright room is the one case where I would genuinely think twice. What is the light like where yours would go?

Off-angle is the correct answer and almost nobody leads with it. Went OLED for movies and the thing my family noticed was the end seats finally looking normal.

Bright room sports on OLED is fine unless you have a window directly opposite. The reflection is the problem far more than the panel brightness is.

Counterpoint on burn-in: I ran a C1 as a work monitor and a TV for four years and there is a faint taskbar ghost. Not from sport, but it is real.
