OLED stops at 97 inches and LCD does not - that is a glass problem

Every few weeks somebody in here asks why there is no 100-inch OLED at a sane price, and the answer has almost nothing to do with what people want to buy. It is motherglass. The raw substrate for LCD panels can be cut much bigger and much cheaper than the equivalent for OLED, which is why LCD sets are on shelves at 115 and 116 inches while OLED tops out at 97 and the ones that exist at that size are priced somewhere between a car and a joke. In practice the OLED ceiling most of us shop under is 77 or 83.

That is worth keeping in mind when you are picking a technology rather than a model. Under 83 inches the OLED argument makes itself. Above 85 you are not really choosing between OLED and mini LED, you are choosing between a mini LED you can afford and a projector, and those are two completely different rooms.

The other half is how the panels get their colour. W-OLED puts white emitters behind red, green and blue filters, which fixed the old problem of blue subpixels ageing faster and shifting colour, but filters throw away light, which is why the last few years have been about MLA and multi-stack panels clawing brightness back. QD-OLED goes the other way, blue emitter plus quantum dots making red and green, and it currently gets both a wider gamut and higher peak brightness out of that.

Has anyone here actually gone from an 83 OLED to a 100-plus LCD? I keep hearing the size wins and the black levels stop mattering, and I do not entirely believe it.

Did exactly that jump last year. Size wins in daylight, black levels absolutely still matter at night. I ended up dimming the room more than I ever did with the OLED.

The motherglass point is the one nobody puts in reviews. It is a fab economics story dressed up as a product decision.

At 100 inches plus in a light controlled room I would take a projector every time. Cheaper per inch and you can hide the whole thing when it is off.

Fair point on the filters, but MLA sets are bright enough now that the old dim OLED complaint is mostly people quoting 2019 numbers.
