Room within a room in a garage conversion, and the scope screen just landed

There is a garage conversion build doing the rounds on r/hometheater that is worth a read for the construction detail alone. It is a room within a room: 100mm RW3 in the cavities, Soundbloc plasterboard, two layers on isolation rails for the two exterior walls. Then on top of the shell, four 100mm RW3 panels at first reflection points on the side walls and three more on the ceiling with a 30mm air gap behind them. The room got repainted a much darker blue with the skirting and ceiling matched, and the screen turned up this week, so it went from stereo to a 5.1.4 scope room in one weekend push.

The 30mm air gap is the part I would point at. Same panel, same thickness, but standing it off the ceiling pushes the absorption meaningfully lower without buying deeper traps. It is the cheapest trick in room treatment and most people skip it because the panels look neater flat against the surface. Doing exterior walls only on isolation rails is the other sensible call - decoupling is expensive and the internal walls are usually not the leak path.

Matching the skirting and ceiling to a dark wall colour is doing more for perceived contrast than most people credit. A projector fills the room with its own light and a white ceiling throws a good chunk of it back at the screen. Nobody said which projector is in there, and with a scope screen that matters, because you either want lens memory for aspect switching or you are living with a zoom-and-mark routine every time you put a 16:9 show on.
