Samsung Display will stop all LCD panel production in South Korea and China by the end of 2020, the company said in a statement to south Korean media and Reuters.

After announcing that it would invest nearly $11 billion in the next generation of QD Display panels to begin production in 2021, samsung Display has officially announced that it will stop making all of its LCD panels by the end of the year.

The company confirmed its plans to the south Korean news media and Reuters.

Samsung Display currently has two LCD production lines in South Korea and two factories in China. It provides LCD TV panels for samsung's "QLED" LCD TVS and LCD screens for other brands of TVS, PCS and mobile devices, including apple's iPhone. Now they have informed all employees and subcontractors that workers will be transferred to other business units.

Samsung electronics, the consumer electronics unit, is not expected to stop selling LCD TVS anytime soon. The company has already purchased LCD TV panels from other panel makers, including au optronics and CSoT (TCL).

Samsung says the focus will now be on adding the next generation of display devices. The company is exploring new concepts such as qd-oled (blue OLED with QD color converter), microLED and QNED (blue LED with QD color converter).

The move could indicate that at least some of the Display technology is in place, and samsung heir lee jae-yong visited samsung Display on March 19 to get an update on the company's progress. As part of the visit, the company released photos that looked like a demonstration of the prototype.
