Samsung Electronics has inked a significant long-term supply contract with LG Display, signaling a strategic move in securing large-sized OLED TV panels for its expanding television lineup. While Samsung Display has the capability to manufacture OLED panels, its focus has predominantly been on mobile device panels, necessitating the need to source big-sized panels for its OLED televisions from external suppliers.

According to reports from DSCC, LG Display has recently entered into a contract with Samsung Electronics to provide 5 million W-OLED display panels over the next five years. This agreement marks a substantial increase in supply compared to previous years, with projected deliveries for this year ranging between 700,000 to 800,000 units, a significant surge from the 100,000 to 200,000 units supplied last year.

Currently, Samsung Electronics offers OLED TVs in various sizes, including 55 inches, 64 inches, 77 inches, and 83 inches. DSCC predicts that LG Display will further expand its offerings to include 42-inch and 48-inch panels, catering to Samsung's diverse television product lineup. All Samsung OLED TVs will feature panels sourced from LG Display under this agreement.

In addition to OLED panels, LG Display is also expected to ramp up its supply of liquid crystal display (LCD) panels to Samsung Electronics. Last year, LG Display provided approximately 3 million LCD panels to Samsung, and this year's supply is estimated to increase to 5 to 6 million units.

LG Display currently commands over 80% of the global OLED TV panel market share based on shipment volume. Furthermore, LG Display stands out as the sole manufacturer capable of mass-producing large-sized OLED TV panels measuring 80 inches and above, solidifying its position as a leader in the OLED display industry.

The partnership between Samsung Electronics and LG Display underscores the collaborative efforts within the display sector, showcasing how industry players leverage each other's strengths to meet the growing demand for high-quality display solutions. As OLED technology continues to evolve, this collaboration is poised to drive innovation and enhance the viewing experience for consumers worldwide.
