Smart TV Shipments Exceed 90% Globally, Android Holds Over 40% Market Share

Market research firm Omdia recently reported that global smart TV shipments accounted for 92 percent of total TV shipments in the first quarter of this year, an increase of 2.9 percentage points over the same period last year.

Omdia previously predicted that the share of smart TVs would reach 91.4% this year, compared to 90.1% for the full year last year.

In terms of smart TV systems, Android's market share dropped from 42.4% last year to 40.9% in the first quarter of this year; Samsung's own platform Tizen's share rose slightly from 21% last year to 21.8% in the first quarter; LG's webOS also increased slightly to 12.4% from 12.2% in the same period last year.

Previously, a consulting analyst predicted that the TV market landscape will see a watershed in the second quarter of this year, when the overseas TV camp led by Sony, LG and Samsung will be overtaken by Chinese TV brands for the first time in history. China's top 7 TV brands increased their global market share from 31% to 36% in the first quarter, and are expected to go even further in the second quarter, breaking the 40% market share mark.
