The build that holds the all-time upvote record over on r/hometheater just got a two year update post, and the headline is the channel count. It went out as a 7.7.4 and it is now a 9.9.4. If I am reading that notation the way it is normally used over there, that is two more bed channels and two more subwoofers on top of what was already an unusually heavy sub array.
What I find more interesting than the numbers is the admission in the post. The original thread called the room finished, in quotation marks, and the follow-up says outright that this was a lie and a lot has changed since. Anyone who has built a room knows exactly how true that is. The thread that gets the upvotes is always the reveal photo, and the thread nobody writes is the one two years later where you list everything you got wrong the first time.
I have never been convinced by the top end of the channel-count race. Going from four heights to six or eight has never done as much in any room I have sat in as fixing the seating position or getting the surrounds off the back wall. Subwoofers are the exception, because multiple subs are solving a room problem rather than adding a new sound source, and that is measurable rather than a matter of taste.
So for anyone here who has been through a second round on the same room: what did the changes actually fix? Not what you added, what problem it solved.
