A new patent from SONY has revealed a bizarre new feature that could appear on the forthcoming PlayStation 5 console. The patent describes a robotic companion that watches the user play the game and responds to the player's emotional state. This is one of the latest patents to be disclosed by SONY, which is really strange to say the least.

SONY's PlayStation 5 will be the company's latest console. It was touted as a significant performance improvement over previous generations, and its release was highly anticipated. However, at this point, beyond some technical details, more details and most of the features of the console are unclear.

SONY recently released its DualSense controller for the PlayStation 5, but its details are unknown. However, the odd robot companion that might come with the PlayStation 5 could steal the spotlight from the console itself. According to a recent report, SONY's latest technology project is the company's development of robotics that can watch human gameplay and respond to the player's mood.

SONY's official description also reveals why. "The data suggest that when a player is watched, his or her game motivation is enhanced," it says. In other words, when players think they are being noticed, their morale and motivation improve, and they subconsciously perform better. In addition, SONY notes, "in anticipation of an increase in the user's affinity with the robot, the motivation to play the game is through the robot observing the game next to it to enhance the user's happiness or sadness."

The news, First reported by Respawn First, said the robot had a "sensory inference unit to infer how the player feels." Unfortunately, whether the project is actually under development remains unknown. Only an official announcement can confirm this, but for now it is likely that the company is now securing all its bases.
