The patent describes a robotic companion that watches the user play the game and responds to the player's emotional state. SONY's official description also reveals why. "The data suggest that when a player is watched, his or her game motivation is enhanced," it says. In other words, when players think they are being noticed, their morale and motivation improve, and they subconsciously perform better. In addition, SONY notes, "in anticipation of an increase in the user's affinity with the robot, the motivation to play the game is through the robot observing the game next to it to enhance the user's happiness or sadness."

Unfortunately, whether the project is actually under development remains unknown.
