As a techie or digital lover, you must be familiar with DLP. What is DLP technology ad how does it work? DLP, which is the abbreviation of Digital Light Procession, means that the image signal should be processed digitally before projecting the light. It is derived from the DMD, a digital micro-mirror device that is developed by TI company to help complete the final step of displaying digital visual information. Literally regarded as a kind of digital micro-mirror element, DMD is a special chip used in the core of DLP technology system - optical engine. Moreover, it is manufactured with an add-on rotating mechanism which helps adjust reflection surface based on standard CMOS semiconductor manufacturing process.

How does DLP work?
Here we can take 1024x768 resolution as the example, you can find a total of 1024x768 small reflective mirrors on a piece of DMD. Each mirror stands for a pixel and is enabled to turn on/off the light by itself. The angle of the light reflected by these small reflective mirrors is controlled and impacted by the video signal while the signal will be modulated by the digital optical processor DLP into a pulse-width modulated signal of equal amplitude. With the pulse width, you are allowed to control the duration of opening and closing the light path via the small reflective mirrors. Thus, you can see gray-scale images of different brightness on the screen.

Based on the number of reflective mirrors, DMD projectors can be divided into single, double and triple-mirror models. Now we take the first one as an example and talk about how the DLP works! How it can produce colors on the screen? It is due to the color wheel (composed of red, green and blue groups) placed on the path of the light source. The light emitted by the light source will produce three primary colors - RGB when passing through a convergent lens to the color filter. And the DMD chip composed of thousands of micro-mirrors will project the light from the source onto the surface of DMD with micro-mirror arrays via rapidly rotating RGB filter.

Those micro-mirrors rotate 5, 000 times per second, reflecting the incident light and passing through the lens , and finally projects the pictures via the lens.

Features of DLP Technology:
The technology that lies in DLP projector is reflective projection technology. DLP projectors has great advantages in the reflection when it comes to the application of reflective DMD elements. They are excellent in contrast and uniformity with high clarity, uniformity, sharp colors, image noise disappeared and stable picture quality. With DLP technology, accurate digital images are ensured to show up and stay everlasting.

Another advantage of DLP projector is the smooth image with relatively large contrast, making it the top choice in the world of home theater. Most of the DLP projectors come with high contrast, ranging from 600:1 to 800:1. Even for the cheapest one, the contrast could be 450:1. While the one of LCD projectors is about 400:1 and low as 250:1 for the cheap one. DLP projectors are sure to bring strong visual impact with minimum sense of pixel structure for natural image display.
