At CES 2022, Samsung unveiled its latest QD-OLED TV, taking home the Best of Innovations 2022 award with the world's first true RGB self-emitting quantum dot OLED display. You may already be familiar with QLED and OLED, but what is QD-OLED? This article will introduce you to its advantages.

QD-OLED as the name implies is the use of Quantum Dot (QD) and OLED technology, the structure of the blue OLED light-emitting panel as the "backlight", while the red and green is similar to QLED TV, the light source to excite the way the quantum dots emitted. Each OLED pixel on a QD-OLED is divided into 3 sub-pixels, the blue sub-pixel native to the blue OLED, and the red and green sub-pixels generated by the excitation of different quantum dots by the blue OLED, which can be combined to form white light.

Since the process of excitation of color light by quantum dots is very efficient and there is almost no loss of light energy, it is possible to obtain a stronger brightness than the current OLED.

The structure of a QD-OLED panel consists mainly of a blue OLED backlight (individual OLED pixels) plus a quantum dot light-emitting layer that excites both red and green colors.

QD-OLEDs also have the benefits of QLEDs, with rich, pure colors inspired by quantum dots that can cover up to 80% of the BT.2020 color gamut.

QD-OLED panel brightness range from 0.0005 - 1,000nits, although the maximum brightness is still not as high as QLED, but the contrast is higher, can present a more complete HDR effect
