Samsung Display has started developing thinner QD-OLED panels. According to Choi Joo-sun, president of Samsung Display, it has increased the yield rate of its quantum dot (QD)-based organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels to 85 percent. Will Samsung QD-OLED screens replace OLED screens?

In the first half of 2022, Samsung Display's small and medium-sized panel sales also ushered in a 10% year-on-year growth and hit a record high.

Although smartphone demand in the first half of 2022 has weakened due to inflationary pressures, Samsung Display has achieved remarkable results in the small and medium-sized panel market, mainly due to the growth in sales of folding screen smartphones.

QD-OLED is designed to combine the best characteristics of OLED (perfect blacks, infinite contrast, etc.) with the advantages of quantum dot LED TVs, such as increased brightness and more vivid color reproduction at higher brightness levels. What differentiates QD-OLED screens from traditional OLED panels that LG Display has long produced is the way they produce images.

LG displays are considered WRGB OLEDs because they use blue and yellow OLED compounds to create white pixels, with red, green and blue sub-pixels created through color filters. Recent OLED TVs also have a fourth unfiltered/white sub-pixel designed to boost brightness, especially for HDR content.

QD-OLEDs change this by emitting blue light through the quantum dots, converting some of the blue to red and green without any color filter, which leads to higher light energy efficiency, since no light is lost to the color filter On a light sheet, QD-OLED TVs should offer higher brightness than previous-generation OLED products. Sony claims that QD-OLED can improve color brightness by 200% compared to conventional TVs.

QD-OLED doesn't eliminate the possibility of burnout, but hopefully these panels will show a longer overall lifespan than existing OLED TVs because the pixels don't work as hard. Samsung Display is using three layers of blue OLED material for each pixel, which preserves its longevity.
