XIAOMI Laser Projector Reiview settled in French version

After the success of the imported version, here comes the Xiaomi Mi laser projectorofficially in France. This means that the menus are finally translated into French (as well as into other European languages such as German for example) and that its “smartTV” interface is adapted to the French market. No more struggling to transform part of the menus into English and having to live with a part not translated into Mandarin. Everything is now planned for French consumers with after-sales support on the national territory and at a price of 1899 € which remains despite everything content compared to the Chinese version. However, one can legitimately wonder about the changes made to the device's operating system and its consequences for the image. Is the French version up to the Chinese version? This is the main question that my battery of tests will try to answer.

Editor's note: this part is taken from the Chinese version test . Indeed, the physical characteristics are identical, it is only the software part which differs.

The Xiaomi laser UST is a DLP video projector with laser light source (phosphor wheel) of native resolution 1080p (Full HD). If it supports 4K HDR signals, it does so by scaling the 4K or UHD sources that it is given to broadcast (this is called downscaling or reverse scaling).

Its ultra short focal length allows it to project a large image with very little perspective. It is ideal for small rooms or for the device to be placed far in front of spectators.

The Xiaomi Mi is a front diffuser equipped with a DMD chip from Texas Instrument 1080p 0.47. The same chip equips LG DLP mini-projectors (PF1000, LARGO) and other Vivitek Qumi Q8. It is therefore a native 1920 × 1080 resolution and no 4K simulation device (like on the BenQ W1700 or Optoma UHD40 ) will enhance the signal. The Xiaomi Mi UST is however 4K and HDR compatible! The life of the light source is given for 25,000 hours.

This device does not have a zoom, it is its positioning that will determine the size of your image. Once you have placed it at a good distance, it will remain to correct any geometry faults thanks to the electronic keystone correction and to adjust the sharpness using the electric focus and a suitable test pattern.

The Xiaomi Mi Laser laser projector is equipped with an ARM Amlogic T998 processor (quad-core Cortex A53 1.8GHz / 64bit + GPU Mali T830) with 2 GB of RAM and a storage capacity of 16 GB, all under Android 8.

The connection panel includes: 3 HDMI 2.0 sockets, one of which is ARC compatible, 1 Ethernet port, 1 optical digital audio input, 1 analog audio / video input, 1 analog compatible digital audio output, 1 USB 3.0 and 1 USB 2.0 socket, as well as Wifi b / g / n / ac and Bluetooth 4.0. To be able to access the television, it will be necessary to use an external module, this device not having any tuner.

The Bluetooth remote control delivered by Xiaomi incorporates a microphone which allows you to control the projector by voice, in French of course.

MENUS AND OPTIONS
As of the first start-up and the configuration of the wifi passed, the projector indicates that a software update is available. I of course carried out this operation before continuing my investigations. The main innovation compared to the Chinese version concerns the adaptation of the menus to Europe.

In the area of image adjustment parameters, the first disappointment appears quickly. Indeed, if the Chinese version was not already very supplied, some options have disappeared from the French model.

There is no elaborate video processing or help with fluency. In terms of colorimetry, no CMS on the 3 dimensions of Gamut is offered, just as there is no gamma editor. Worse, while the Chinese version had an RGB level adjustment, it disappeared from the French version. Like the Asian model, the device is compatible 4K HDR but not by default; to make its HDMI 2.0 sockets, you will need to activate option 2.0.

Regarding image management, it is therefore a minimum service, or even less. In this area I regret the import model.

For the adjustments, we are entitled only to the classics: contrast, brightness, saturation, nuance and finesse, associated with a noise reducer and three choices of color temperature.
Five image modes configured at the factory are offered: “ standard, film, sports, light,” and “ user memory”.
