ProjectorCentral has a case study on Batbox, a baseball XR venue that puts real bats and balls against projected pitchers with live ball tracking. They opened their flagship in Dallas, they are aiming at weekly installs and 100 simulators inside a year, and they standardised on the BenQ LK935 4K laser projector after head to head testing against a competitor that cost nearly twice as much.
It is a vendor-sponsored piece, so take the conclusion with the usual pinch of salt. What I find useful is the reason they gave. Their marketing VP says some of the rivals had higher brightness numbers on paper but BenQ gave better real-world image quality and light. No lumen figure for the LK935 appears anywhere in the article, which is a bit rich in a piece about brightness, but the underlying point holds up: in a simulator bay the projector is fighting ambient light on an odd-shaped surface and being asked to render fast motion without smearing. Peak lumens on a spec sheet does not predict any of that.
This matters here because sim rooms are quietly becoming the reason a lot of people buy their second projector. Golf bays first, now this. The requirements are different from a movie room in ways that trip people up - you want motion handling and consistent output across a full evening of use, and you do not care much about black level because the lights are on anyway. Lamp replacement schedules also stop being an annoyance and start being a business cost, which is most of why laser wins these deals.
