The Dolby Vision 2 update has actually started landing on Hisense sets. The 6 August announcement lists UX, UR9, UR8 and U7, and it works whether your set runs Google TV or VIDAA, which is not nothing given Hisense uses different platforms in different regions. Rollout runs for weeks by region, so a compatible TV without it yet is just waiting its turn.
Most of the noise is about the two-tier split and which sets get the Max features. The thing I keep chewing on is the Intensity Slider. It is in the basic tier, so it is on every DV2 set rather than only the expensive ones, and it applies across Dolby Vision content generally rather than only material mastered for DV2.
A slider that lets the viewer dial HDR intensity up or down is a strange object if you think about what Dolby has been arguing for a decade. The whole pitch was that the grade travels intact from the mastering suite to your room, that metadata carries creative intent and the TV just executes it. Handing the viewer a knob marked more-or-less-of-that is a fairly blunt admission that a lot of Dolby Vision grades are simply too dark in a real living room with a lamp on and a window behind the sofa.
I think it is the right call and I think it gets misused within a week. Plenty of these will end up parked at maximum next to a Vivid picture mode, and the people who most need it will never find the menu. Then again, a control that keeps owners out of the tone mapping settings might be a net win.
Anyone with a UR9 or U7 got the update yet? What does it do at the extremes, lift the whole curve or just the shadows?
