Google is bolting sports briefs onto Gemini on Google TV. The pitch is narrated catch-up on whatever league you follow, starting with the NBA, NCAA basketball, NHL, MLB, MLS and NWSL, sitting in the Gemini tab on the home screen. It builds on the news briefs they added last year, and it landed alongside two other things - visual answers that pull up a live scorecard and where to watch, and deep dives that narrate a breakdown of whatever topic you asked about.
The sports part is the one I keep turning over. If I miss a game I open the league app or YouTube and I get actual footage. A narrated summary is a different product. It's for the league you follow loosely, the one where you want to know who got hurt and who is streaking without giving it ninety minutes. That's a real gap. Whether a generated brief fills it depends entirely on where the information comes from, and Google hasn't said. No word on sourcing, no word on how current it is at tipoff, no word on whether it will blurt out a result you were saving.
Rollout is the US and Canada now, with Australia, New Zealand and Great Britain named for this spring. Everyone else waits. It also needs a Gemini-enabled device, so a three year old Google TV set is not getting any of this.
For those of you who follow a second or third league casually - would you actually use a narrated brief on the TV, or is that a phone job you'd never move to the big screen?
