Yesterday, Google announced that it is discontinuing software support for OnHub starting December 19, 2022. The OnHub router will still provide a Wi-Fi signal, but users will not be able to manage it with the Google Home app. It will not be possible to update Wi-Fi network settings, add additional Wifi devices or run speed tests. Google Assistant features such as "Hey Google, pause my Wi-Fi" will stop working.

The OnHub's performance is not guaranteed, and OnHub users will then have to find a replacement.

This wireless router is a smart router launched by Google together with TP-Link and Asus in 2015, which is jokingly called a "garbage can" router with a maximum wireless transmission rate of 1900Mbps (600Mbps in the 2.4GHz band + 1300Mbps in the 5GHz band). (1300Mbps). This router can remotely control any smart device at home as long as it is connected to the Internet.

However, as long as users use the device to control other smart homes, they must sign in to their Google account, which exposes their home network usage to the risk of being monitored by Google.

The router, which was previously described as the heart of Google's future smart home, is also set to exit the stage. Google has also looked for an alternative, offering users a 40 percent discount on the Nest Wifi router, which should be considerably less than the OnHub price, which was previously as high as $220. Currently, Nest Wifi sells for $149 on its own, plus an extender for a minimum of $189.

Google's heavy $3.2 billion acquisition of nest in 2014 surprised people for a while at the time. And Google really needs to establish a foothold in the smart home market. For a company like Google, which regards innovation as its life, its current status in the smartphone sector is not enough to make it happy. Because the standard of this market is established by Apple, currently in the reputation and profit share, Google ecology is also lagging behind Apple ecology.

To complete the subversion of the Apple model and establish a new benchmark, Google must seize a new position. And the Internet of Things, is the best opportunity that Google can seize.

However, after the future smart home networking, how to protect user privacy, is also worth thinking about the major manufacturers.
