How to improve WiFi signal?

Now it is no exaggeration to say that WIFI has become an indispensable way of surfing the Internet. But the question is, how can I make the WIFI signal better? How to improve the WIFI signal?

Now every household has WIFI, so signal interference is inevitable. If you find that WIFI is often stuck or even dropped, you should consider configuring the WIFI channel to improve the problem of interference between signals.

What is a channel? Routers transmit WIFI signals in the form of electromagnetic waves, and the most important feature of electromagnetic waves is frequency.

Currently, most routers work in the 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz frequency bands. The channel is the subdivision of the frequency band, just like the high-speed road of the wireless signal, to prevent the signal from colliding during the transmission process.

For example, the most common 2.4GHz frequency band is subdivided into 14 different channels.

To put it bluntly, the WIFI signal of each household is running on an avenue called "2.4G". In order to prevent mutual interference and collision, this avenue is divided into 14 lanes. The router in the next door may be in lane 1, and the router in your home may be in lane 6. Of course, even if the channels are divided, there are too many people who use them. If there are too many users on the same channel, interference will be formed, the WIFI signal will become poor, and sometimes even the connection will be dropped.

So how to improve the signal of WiFi?

1. Test out the strongest channel

As mentioned above, the first method to improve the signal is to test out the strongest channel and switch your channel to the strongest one. As long as you avoid jamming crowded channels, you can reduce signal interference. You can find a signal strength test software from the Internet, and then configure the router on each channel separately, observe the signal strength, and assign the best signal strength to the router. It should be noted here that the larger the signal strength value, the better, such as -60dBm, which means the signal strength is greater than -65dBm.

Another thing to note is that it is not only other routers that will interfere with WIFI signals, but also Bluetooth headsets, Bluetooth keyboards, and microwave ovens that work in the same frequency band. Because Bluetooth and microwave ovens also work near the 2.4GHz frequency band.

2. Avoid obstacles blocking the signal

If you find that even if you change the channel, the WIFI signal is still not ideal, then you must consider another important factor that affects the channel: "wall".

Although the closer the distance, the better the WIFI signal, sometimes, we found that the signal next door is stronger than our own home. This is because compared to the distance, the loss of the signal through the wall is more serious. Therefore, it is better to let the router be four or five meters away, or even six or seven meters away, and try not to let the WIFI signal pass through the wall, especially the load-bearing wall with more metal structure.

Some people will say, install more routers as relays at home, or buy two wireless relays directly, and put them in the room where the signal is poor. In fact, after testing, this method requires higher router performance and unstable network speed, so it is not recommended.

3. Adjust the router direction
In order to save space, place the antenna of the router horizontally. If the signal is not good at this time, then you have to reflect on it.

Under the same conditions, I compared the signal strength when the antenna was placed horizontally and vertically, and the result was surprising.

At first, I thought that placing the antenna horizontally would not have any effect. However, after changing to vertical placement, the signal has been enhanced a lot. The signal strength jumped from the previous "-60dBm to -50dBm" to between "-40dBm to -30dBm". To be sure, it is better to place the antenna vertically for the signal.

In addition to the above three points, many people will find that in the same environment, the wireless network card of a laptop or desktop computer is stronger than a mobile phone or tablet regardless of signal strength and speed, and the speed of opening web pages and online videos is also smoother than that of mobile phones or tablets.

This has nothing to do with routers, because the performance of wireless network cards used by mobile phones is limited by power consumption, so the ability of mobile phones to receive WIFI signals is generally weaker than that of notebooks.
