Someone on Reddit is stuck between a projector setup and a 100 inch TV for a big room, and the thing tipping them is that Sony, Samsung and Hisense 100 inch sets are landing around 1,800 to 2,000 dollars in the US now. That is genuinely close to a decent projector plus a real screen once you stop pretending the screen is optional.
I have run both and I think the honest answer has changed. Five years ago the price gap did the arguing for you. Now the argument is about the room. A 100 inch TV works in daylight, works with the lamps on, works when someone walks through, and needs no setup beyond getting it through the door, which at 100 inches is not a joke. A projector still wins the moment you close the curtains and go above about 110 inches, and it wins on the feel of the image, which is not marketing, it is reflected light versus emitted light hitting your eyes for two hours.
Where I would push back on the framing: if you are only going 100 inches, buy the TV. The projector premium is only worth paying if you are going to exploit the one thing it does that no TV does, which is scale cheaply. Going from 100 to 130 inches costs a projector owner a screen. It costs a TV owner five figures.
So the question is not projector versus TV, it is whether the room you have can go bigger than 100 inches. If it cannot, this is already decided.
What is the wall width where people here flipped from TV to projector? Mine was around 120 inches diagonal.
