Samsung QN84A adopts a QLED panel while QN85A adopts a NEO QLED panel.

What is QLED?

The name was introduced in 2017 because the TVs use quantum dot technology on LED panels. Quantum dots + LEDs = QLED.

This is an evolution of the quantum dot technology first introduced in Samsung TVs in 2015. The evolution of the name was indeed a marketing move to rival high-end OLEDs (organic light-emitting diodes).

At the time, Samsung conveyed the message that QLED was a superior technology with more advantages than OLED. This is part of the ongoing battle between LED-based TVs and OLED TVs.

Samsung also formed a QLED alliance with Hisense and TCL, and you'll find QLED TVs sold by brands other than Samsung.

What is Neo QLED?

In 2021, Samsung has made another improvement to its quantum dot TVs, marketing them as Neo QLEDs. Samsung still insists on having the same foundation of quantum dot layers and LED lighting, but Samsung's new Neo QLED TVs replace these LEDs with Mini LEDs.

This means Samsung can get more precise control from the previous LED arrays because these LEDs are much smaller. This means better control, less light loss, and a more accurate scale from dark to light.

The main differences between Samsung QN84A and Samsung QN85A

1. Motion Enhancement Technology

Samsung QN84A provides a motion rate 120, while Samsung QN85A provides a motion rate 240. The higher the refresh rate, the better the stability of the displayed image (screen)

2. Streaming Services

QN84A is featured by Apple TV+, Disney+, Google Play Movies & TV, Hulu, Netflix, Pandora, Prime Video, Redbox, SHOWTIME, Sling TV, YouTube while QN85A doesn't have Disney+, Pandora and Redbox.

3. Network

Despite Built-in Wi-Fi, QN84A also supports Ethernet for more network connection choices.

It’s the same thing except the Speakers! I owned the QN85A and returned it to get the QN84A saved $600. I even put them side by side before returning it. The box was the same and specs. The refresh rate as both the same 120hz. It has the Turbo acceleration +. It has an ADS panel which is similar to an IPS panel.
