Three days ago, Sony announced its first quarter performance report for the 2020 fiscal year (April 1 to June 30). Although hardware sales are expected to decline, Sony’s PlayStation Plus subscriptions have risen sharply. Sony's consolidated sales and operating income approached 2 trillion yen (US$19 billion), an increase of 2% over the same period last year. The PS4's sales volume was only 1.9 million units, a 40% year-on-year decrease.

Although the sales ranking of PS4 has not risen, with cumulative sales of 112 million, PS4 is still the second-selling full-size game console in history, second only to PS2.

Sony PS4 Sales decreased but PS+ user and digital game sales increased

Although hardware sales are expected to decline, Sony’s PlayStation Plus subscriptions have risen sharply, with 3.5 million new users on the platform, bringing its subscriber base to 45 million. The global blockade is likely to be one of the reasons for the increase, and the US$1,200 COVID-19 relief check issued by the United States may have prompted many domestic workers to spend on the annual subscription fee of US$60. The coronavirus pandemic may also be responsible for the decline in physical game sales and the increase in digital game sales. Nearly 3/4 of game sales come from the PlayStation Store (72%) rather than retail stores (26%).

Sony expects that after the PS5 is released, games and network services will grow substantially, but due to increased spending during the PS5 release, these increases will result in flat operating income. The new generation of hardware is usually sold at a loss in the beginning, so this is not surprising.
