Lumagen is taking a 9.4.6 room to CEDIA in Denver next month, Sound Room 7, second run of the Paragons of Home Cinema demo, and the piece debuting in it is the ArtisaN 8K Ready video and audio processor at 11,495 dollars. Eight inputs, two outputs, real time scaling, HDR dynamic tone mapping, lip sync control, a 3ms game mode. Then there is the line that made me stop reading: the upgrade path to 4K120 and 8K processing is an additional 2,500 dollars.
So the name describes what it can be upgraded into rather than what it does out of the box. That is a fair enough engineering position, the hardware is presumably specced to take it and you pay when you need it, but calling the base unit 8K Ready invites people to assume the price includes the thing in the name. Say 8K capable for 13,995 and nobody is confused.
Worth pointing out too that nothing else in that room is going to make the 8K question urgent. It is built around a Christie single chip DLP and a Stewart two way masking screen doing 2.39:1 at 188 inches with acoustically transparent material, which is the real reason a demo like this looks the way it does. Masking and screen material change more about a room than any processor upgrade ever will, and both are unglamorous enough that they never lead the press release.
For anyone running a Lumagen already, has dynamic tone mapping on your projector aged well, or has your PJ's own HDR handling caught up enough that you would not buy the box again?
