If your receiver fires up every morning because somebody switched the TV on to check the weather, stop digging through the receiver menus first. Most of that behaviour is being sent by the TV.
CEC gets a different marketing name on every brand, Bravia Sync, Anynet+, Simplink, but the mechanic underneath is identical. When the TV wakes and its audio output is pointed at the external audio system, it broadcasts a power on down the HDMI chain and the receiver just obeys. The receiver isn't deciding anything. So the first setting to change is the TV's own audio output: park it on the internal speakers for casual viewing and only move it to the audio system when you actually want the amp awake. On most sets that single change stops the morning wake up completely.
You can kill it at the receiver instead by turning HDMI Control off, but be honest about what that costs. No one touch handoff, no volume from the TV remote, and on some sets ARC won't renegotiate until you manually select TV Audio. While you're in there, check standby passthrough as well. If it's off, the receiver has to power up simply to pass a signal through, which looks like the same fault and is a different one.
The awkward bit is that most of us want CEC for movies and not for the news, and no manufacturer treats that as a real use case. I gave up and built two remote macros instead of solving it properly.
Has anyone found a receiver that lets you honour CEC on some inputs and ignore it on others? That is the thing I actually want.
