There are many signs that Apple may release a new HomePod

Apple has been rumored to launch a smaller, cheaper version of HomePod later this year, and there are growing signs that a new model may be on the horizon.

In addition to best buy selling HomePod for $199.99 this week, bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman noted that apple employees can now buy up to 10 homepods at a 50 percent discount, up to two in a single purchase, and a larger purchase limit could be a sign that apple is clearing out its current HomePod inventory before the new model is released.

In addition, HomePod was listed as "sold out" on apple's online store last week, albeit briefly.

Over the past few years, apple has steadily improved HomePod's usability by adding features such as toggle support, multiuser voice detection, ambient sound and multiroom audio, but Siri is still widely criticized. To that end, Gurman previously pointed out that the smaller HomePod will arrive later this year, and Siri will be enhanced.

Apple has never disclosed sales of HomePod and classifies the speaker as a "wearable, home and accessory" category.

While HomePod is positioned as a premium speaker, it has some low-cost competitors in smart assistants, including the Amazon Echo and Google Home. According to Gurman's previous report, apple's smaller HomePod will likely have two high-pitched speakers, down from seven on the current model.
