Every writeup of tvOS 27 leads on speed, because that's what Apple led on. Fine. But scan the feature list and it's AutoMix, Crossfade, video podcasts, Thread 1.4, a reworked Apple TV Remote, and a pile of smaller stuff. Four of those are entertainment features. The Thread one is quietly the most consequential and it's getting a single bullet point everywhere.
The Apple TV has been carrying a Thread radio and acting as a border router for a while now, which means for a lot of people it's the thing actually holding their smart home mesh together whether they know it or not. If you've got Matter locks or sensors and no HomePod, your Apple TV is the border router. So a Thread spec bump isn't a nice-to-have, it's the plumbing changing under a network you can't see and can't easily debug.
What I can't tell you, and Apple's announcement doesn't spell out, is whether this is a firmware-level radio change or just a stack update, and whether older Apple TV 4K units get the same behaviour as current ones. That's exactly the detail that'll bite someone. Border router changes have a way of surfacing as "my sensor stopped reporting three weeks after an update" rather than as anything obvious on day one.
Anyone running a decent-sized Thread network off an Apple TV and already on the beta? I'm curious whether anything dropped off the mesh after the update, or whether it's been completely uneventful. Uneventful is the correct answer for network plumbing, but it's rarely the one you get.
