Someone over on AVForums has just started an extension and is planning two 65in sets: one wall-mounted in a 6m x 9m open plan kitchen and living space, and a second in the old kitchen once it is stripped out, a 12ft x 12ft room that becomes a dedicated cinema. Same model in both, the LG OLED65C54LA at GBP 1299 from Richer Sounds. Total budget around GBP 4.5k covering both TVs, an AV amp and a speaker package.
My issue is not the TV choice, it is which room gets it. They describe the open plan space as a very light room that gets watched casually as a common area. That is the single worst environment you can put an OLED into, and it is where the money is going first. Meanwhile the 12ft x 12ft cinema room, the one with controlled light and a dedicated seating position, is the room where OLED black levels actually earn their price, and it is being treated as the second purchase.
The arithmetic is the other problem. Two sets at GBP 1299 is GBP 2598, which leaves roughly GBP 1900 for an AV receiver, a full speaker package and floorstanders. That is a tight package for a room you are calling dedicated, and speakers are the part you keep for fifteen years while the panel gets replaced twice.
If it were me, I would put a bright mini LED in the light open plan room where the soundbar already lives, spend the OLED money on the dark room, and shift a few hundred out of the panel budget into the speakers. Anyone here running OLED in a genuinely bright open plan space and happy with it in daytime?
