What's new on the PlayStation 5 console for the system test version?

Sony announced a system beta update for the PlayStation 5 game console, introducing new features such as Discord voice chat, and launching tests in the US, Canada, Japan, UK, Germany and France markets.

This beta version update mainly enhances various user experience, accessibility and social function enhancements, and adds support for variable refresh rate (VRR) at 1440p resolution. Invited beta participants will receive an email with instructions on how to download the beta and get started.

What's new on the PlayStation 5 console for the system test version?​


Discord Voice Chat​


You can now voice chat in Discord on PS5 consoles, and easily chat with friends on most other gaming platforms.

  • First, users need to log in to your Discord and PlayStation Network accounts on the PS5 console
  • Then, use the Discord app on your mobile device or computer to have a Discord voice chat on your PS5 console
  • You can also let your Discord friends see when you're online and what games you're playing.

Screen Sharing​


You can now send screen share requests or start sharing your screen with friends directly from a friend's profile. Just select the "Share Screen" icon on your friend's profile to start a new session.

Introducing a new "Join Game" icon in Party Chats​


On the voice chat card, a "Join Game" icon will be displayed, and the user can directly join the game that other members of the group are playing.

You can join a game directly by selecting the player and selecting [Join Game] from the menu.

New "Friends Who Play" tile​


In Game Center, you can now see which of your friends own the game, who is currently online, and who is playing the game.

Manually upload game screenshots to PlayStation App​


You can now manually select a screenshot or game clip from your PS5 console and upload it to the PS App.

Other features​


  • Supports variable refresh rate at 1440P resolution. To check if your HDMI device is compatible, go to [Settings] > [Screen and Video] > [Video Output] > [Test 1440p Output].

  • You can also now sort and filter games after adding them to the games list.
  • You can use the filters in the library to easily find PS VR games, as well as PS VR2 games for PS VR2 when it launches later this month.
