Google has been listing smart projectors from Vankyo, Epson and XGIMI alongside its TVs as Google TV devices, and that is the corner of the projector market I have been waiting to shake out. For years the app situation was the whole problem: some Android build nobody supported, a store full of the wrong versions, and the one service everybody actually pays for either missing or running at a resolution that made you angry.
A licensed platform should mean the apps are the same apps as on a TV rather than a sideloaded gamble. In practice I want to hear from owners before calling it solved. Certification and app availability are not the same thing, and I have been burned by a projector that ran a proper platform and still shipped without one particular service until a firmware update landed months later.
The other thing worth watching is what this does to the cheap end. If a licensed platform becomes the price of entry for a projector a normal person can set up alone, the no name gear gets pushed further into the pile where you accept phone mirroring as a workaround and call it fine. That is not obviously bad, it just means the gap between 200 dollars and 800 dollars stops being about brightness and starts being about software.
Anyone running one of these? Specifically: which apps were installed on day one, and did anything need a workaround?
