The 7985 is the follow up to last year's 7875, same Roku platform, same Ambilight strip on the back, and quantum dots added to the series for the first time. That is the whole upgrade as far as the announcement goes. No sizes, no prices, no dimming zone count, nothing about peak brightness. QLED on a budget set means a quantum dot film sitting between the backlight and the panel. It widens the color gamut. It tells you nothing about whether the backlight has any local dimming worth the name, and in this bracket it usually does not.
Worth knowing who you are buying from. Skyworth holds a trademark licence to sell Philips branded televisions in North America, and the quote in the release comes from Skyworth USA's chief executive. The Philips you would buy in Europe is a different company's product. That is not a knock, Skyworth ships enormous volume, but if you are expecting European Philips picture processing because you read a review from over there, that is not what arrives in the box.
Ambilight is the real draw and always has been. Nobody else ships it. This version does the usual list: follows the picture, a music mode that pulses to the beat, reacts to games, and stays on as ambient light behind Roku's backdrop art when the set is idle. Two things the marketing never mentions. It wants a light colored wall behind it, and it wants the panel a few inches off that wall or the light has nowhere to spread.
HDR10, Dolby Vision and HLG are all listed, Atmos too. Anyone here lived with a 7875 for a full year? I want to know whether the Ambilight LEDs stay color matched as they age.
