LED TV vs LCD TV, What's the difference?

LED TV vs LCD TV.jpg

In the current market, all home LED TV is actually a kind of LCD TV, only the backlighting is different. LCD is the general name of LCD TV, LED is a kind of LCD TV backlight technology, LED TV backlight has edge lighting and full array lighting in two ways.

LED TVs use light guides to project the picture onto the screen, while traditional LCD TVs use CCFLs (a type of miniature fluorescent light bulb) for backlighting.

Some manufacturers market LED TVs as the new panel, but in reality, LED TVs are LCD TVs, with the difference being the change from CCFL backlighting to LED backlighting. Now you should know this misconception.

LED TV Pros and Cons

LED (Light Emitting Diode) technology is more advanced than LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) technology, with better overall visual effects, more energy efficient, and therefore more expensive. However, at the same time, LED TVs have a longer lifespan and are less expensive to maintain.

PROS

Energy Saving

LEDs replace fluorescent bulbs with light-emitting diodes, making them more energy efficient than conventional LCD TVs.

High Brightness

LED TVs use a separate dimming and backlighting system, so they can present a brighter picture.

Durability

LED TVs have been proven reliable by years of experience, while OLED TVs are far less durable than LED TVs, with the added risk of screen burn-in.

CONS

Narrow viewing angle

One disadvantage of LED TVs is the viewing angle, as you move away from the center of the screen, the color and contrast of the image quality decreases. But OLED screens have the advantage on this point, providing accurate images with wide angles.

Response time

Compared to OLED, LCDs are slower to respond to changes in state. A faster response time will give you less blurring or tearing.

If you don't have a clear idea of your budget, it's hard to choose the best one in the right range. On the other hand, the size of the TV is also important, and it directly determines the price of the TV.

Although many people advocate that the bigger the size of the TV the better, choosing the right size for the actual usage and room size will bring the best experience. You can use the TV size calculator to determine the right size and the right viewing distance in advance.

Picture quality

The most important thing when choosing a TV, whether you are an audio-visual enthusiast or a gamer, is the picture quality. You can judge the quality of image presentation based on resolution, contrast ratio, motion compensation, wide color gamut technology, brightness, refresh rate, light control, etc.

Ports and Connections

Something that is easy to overlook before purchasing a TV is to focus on the number of TV ports, especially the HDMI input. It can be very frustrating to find out that there are not enough ports to connect your devices when you are using them. Gamers should also pay special attention to support such as HDMI 2.1, VRR, low input latency, etc.
