JVC is demoing contrast over lumens at CEDIA, which suits its hand nicely

JVC is taking the DLA-NZ900 and DLA-NZ800 to CEDIA in Denver from 1 to 4 September, and the framing of the announcement is the part I keep re-reading. The pitch is that great home theatre performance goes beyond brightness and needs contrast, colour and resolution balanced together. Which is true, and is also the argument you make when brightness is the one number you are not winning on.

The demo setup tells you what they actually believe. The NZ900 gets the main theatre with 8K e-shiftX, the BLU-Escent laser and a claimed 150,000:1 native contrast, thrown at a 165-inch Stewart multi-masking screen. The NZ800, at a claimed 100,000:1 native, goes in the gaming room on a 100-inch Screen Innovations Slate for native 4K/120p with ALLM. Note the screen sizes. The flagship demo is 65 inches wider diagonally than the gaming one, on a surface most people reading this will never buy.

There is no lumen figure anywhere in the announcement, which given the message is at least consistent. And the native contrast claim is the one spec where JVC has genuinely had nobody near it for years, so leaning on it is not spin, it is playing the strongest card in the hand. What annoys me is that the industry only discovered contrast mattered once single-chip DLP rivals started winning the brightness column outright.

The gaming theatre is the more interesting booth to me. Native 4K/120p with proper low latency on a projector this size has been the missing piece for large-screen console play for a long time. Anyone going to Denver, that is the room I would want a report from.

Native contrast on the JVC line is still the reason people put up with everything else about them. Nothing else at the price gets close in a properly dark room.
