Came across a basement build that has the part I keep putting off: an 11x14 room with the projector, and an overflow room right outside the doors with a sectional for eight and an LG CX with a soundbar. Both rooms get fed off an HDMI splitter so everyone is watching the same thing for the Super Bowl or a big family night. Nice idea, and also the exact spot where these setups usually go sideways.
It comes down to EDID. A splitter has to report one set of display capabilities back to the source, and whatever it reports is what both rooms are stuck with. Auto-copy modes tend to grab whichever display answers first, or fall back to the lowest common denominator across both outputs, and then you find out the projector is capped because something else in the chain only claims 1080p. Most decent splitters let you lock EDID to a fixed profile or to one specific output, and that setting is worth finding before you start blaming the source device.
The other thing is that a CX and a projector will never look like the same picture, which does not matter at all for football and matters quite a lot if someone in the overflow room is watching a film and comparing. And with the doors open you have two audio paths with different latency, so the overflow room cheers a beat behind the main room. Not fatal, just funny the first time it happens.
